Giordano Jazz Dance Chicago premiers three new pieces at its annual fall engagement at the Harris Theater for Music and Dance

The show on Friday, October 22 boasted premiers from some of Chicago’s finest dance choreographers. The show was at the Harris Theater for Music and Dance located at 205 E. Randolph Dr, nearby Millennium Park. The Friday show was littered with GJDC supporters, Harris supporters, and dance enthusiasts.
Choreographer Karen Mareck Grundy showcased her latest full company piece called “Journey In.” Colorful costumes and strong undertones of self-discovery, journey, and support left audience members smiling as they watched.
“Yes, And…” by Autumn Eckman showcased some distinct percussion to go along with jazz movement. The blue set and quick, solo movement of varying company members gave the distinct impression of water molecules in movement.
Eckman also choreographed and showcased a jazz pas de deux danced by Jarrett Kelly and Maeghan McHale. Authentic jazz allowed for the dancers to show off their musicality, strength, and chemistry in this sassy piece.
Other popular successes appeared in the program such as the re-staging of Brock Clawson’s “Give and Take,” “Prey” by former Movin’ Out alum Ron DeJesus, and “I Want You” by Rennie Harris.
Overall the show covered an array of jazz styles from the sultry, intense dancing in “Prey” to the light, old school hip-hop vibe of “I Want You.” Giordano Jazz Dance Chicago is next on its way to tour in Austria and Germany. GJDC company dancer, Joshua Blake Carter looks forward to dancing seven shows in their nine day travels.

I really, really enjoyed this. The humor works brilliantly, and the animation is much better than I had imagined. The way you have “blended” (hehe) it all together makes this look like a solid, whole product, as good as any Pixar short. Probably better. But then again: That’s my opinion.
