HOW TO: Keep holiday travel-drama down to a minimum

With holiday travel right around the corner, the anticipation of reconvening with loved ones builds. But with high safety alerts, new TSA scans, and increased costs, the actual “travel” part of a holiday vacation may make you cringe. Below are just a few tips to help make your travel experience a pleasant one.

 

1. Pack light. Yes, ladies, this may be a challenge for those who adore their shoes and use them to maximize every outfit. But investing in travel-sized toiletries, bringing your “can wear with anything” shoes, and packing properly (namely, rolling your clothes instead of leaving them folded; also limits wrinkles!) can mean saving $50 of luggage fees!
2. Plan for security lines. Besides allowing yourself time to deal with long lines through security, do your part to keep things running smoothly. Metal objects set off the detectors. This means belt buckles, metal jewelry, body jewelry, loose change in your pocket. Remove it all if possible. Also, according to tsa.gov, keeping your carry-on uncluttered will also help with the process. “This lets our Transportation Security Officers get a clear, uncomplicated X-ray image of your carry-on.” And also lowers the odds of pat-downs and luggage searches!
3. Use a travel agent. This may seem extensive for holiday travel, but travel agents know the ins and outs of airports and fees. They know how to get you discounts, promotions, and upgrades while still being able to handle your “Panic Button Moments,” as travel expert, Mark Murphy, calls them. With the ash cloud from Iceland’s volcano raining on many travelers’ plans last year, an agent would be able to find other flights, locate other airports, and deal with airlines and other accommodations for you. And they get paid by their suppliers, so you don’t have to worry about additional fees!
4. Go Green. Many airlines now give you the option not only of emailing your ticket to you, but downloading it onto your phone! So when you go to your gate and are ready to board the plan, the airline clerk simply scans a barcode that is downloaded onto your PDA and you are on your way! But, don’t forget to turn your PDA off once you get onto the plane!
5. Relax and enjoy the ride. Update your iPod, bring a new movie or book. Give yourself something to look forward to and distract from hustle and bustle of the airport. Doing work on the airplane is hardly a start to your vacation, so take a little “ME” time and make it count! (Wine, cocktail, or hot tea can’t hurt, either!)

Having worked at Showtime Networks creating movie posters and key art, I know how challenging it is to go against the grain.
